New Project!

Take in the glory of my sister and her husbands new pad in NYC! Look at that architecturally gorgeous blank space just waiting to be Heather and Chrisified.

I'm thinking magenta (we haven't done that before have we?...oh yeah in Portland, hmmm). What is this guys- Apartment #6 in the last 10 years? You are keeping my design mojo flowing!

Can't wait to get started. Stay tuned for pics!

Frank Lloyd Wright's Falling Water

Last weekend I got the priviledge to tour one of America's great architectural monuments. Although built over 50 years ago, I witnessed detail after detail of construction elements that would greatly challenge even our best craftsman of today. He blew the budget, almost doubling the clients intended investment. It took longer than hoped to construct no doubt due to the ways he was stretching the craftsmans engineering and material applications. The architectural structure has required modifications since construction to be able to stand the test of time. Yet beyond all these ways in which I measure my own success on a project- it is amazing! Truly a tribute to great design. Beyond all these "incidentals" (:)), his vision was utterly brilliant and the ability to have client and craftsman embrace his perceptively impossible ideas gives me profound hope for the possibilities. Here's to you Frank!

Rolling up Our Sleeves-and Making it Dirty!

With the exciting challenge of building something new, connected to something old and made to feel as if it was always there, quite a bit of thought needed to be put into surface finishes. Spaces wanted to feel aged, worn, patina'd by life itself. This included the floor. On this day we set out to make this happen. Previously the floor finisher had stained the white oak wood floors. I arrived on the job site with lambs wool rags and oil based penetrating stains in a nice dark, rich, chocolate color. We set out in the process of darkening the floor edges and letting it fade into just the stain color where, "many people have walked." It turned out magnificent! The floors were instantly richer and more alive. Stay tuned for finished pictures!!

Radical Railings

Concept becomes reality for this loft railing system. Idaho slate is inserted into died poplar and capped with granite caps, to create unique newel posts. Custom ballusters are made thick and wide, to bring a clean contemporary edge to the look.
